ASA-Endorsed ABA MOCA® Simulation Course
at Vanderbilt University
The Center for Experiential Learning and Assessment at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VSM) is now offering realistic immersive patient simulation education for ABA Diplomates seeking to fulfill their Practice Performance Assessment and Improvement (PPAI) requirement for the American Board of Anesthesiologists (ABA) Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA®) Program. This simulation course fulfills the simulation education requirement of Part 4 of MOCA®. The simulation program at VSM has been endorsed by the American Society of Anesthesiologist’s (ASA) Committee on Simulation Education to provide high quality training to ASA members. The registration brochure can be found here.
For additional information on MOCA® requirements, please go to the ASA’s Web site. The ASA also provides links to related organizations.
Course Description: The 8-hour course follows the most current requirements of the ASA Committee on Simulation Education. Participants will practice individually and in teams to manage a series of simulated events in a variety of patient care settings. Participants will undergo a brief orientation to the simulation equipment prior to providing care to a variety of simulated patients. Each participant will be asked to take the lead as the primary decision maker on at least one simulated event during the day. The simulations will typically include the use of a high-fidelity patient simulator (e.g., Laerdal SimMan 3G™) as well as simulated clinicians and/or patients (i.e., actors playing scripted roles) and routine clinical equipment.
ach simulation will be videotaped. After each simulated event, there will be a debriefing session during which videos may be reviewed and all participants will be encouraged to join in the discussion.
To fulfill the American Board of Anesthesiology’s (ABA) Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program (MOCA®) Part 4, participants will need to complete an ASA online evaluation within three days of the simulation course. In addition, participants will need to reply to an ASA email survey that asks the status of any changes or enhancements to practice that were planned as a result of the simulation training. Upon submission, your practice improvement submission will be reviewed for completeness and then transmitted to the ABA. You should be notified by the ABA of their awarding of MOCA™ Part IV credit approximately two months thereafter.
Course Cost: Tuition for this course is $2,000 and includes 7 hours of hands-on experiential simulation learning, personalized guided feedback, a syllabus, meals, and MOCA™ Part 4 simulation credit. CME credit is not yet available but is not necessary to receive MOCA™ Part 4 credit. Please see CELA’s cancellation policy. About our Center: The mission of the Center for Experiential Learning and Assessment (CELA) will provide an educationally rich environment for training healthcare professionals to practice safe, effective and compassion clinical care. CELA is dedicated to the use of simulations to fulfill its mission. It is informed by the best practices of teaching and clinical practice and grounded in theory-based research. Integral to this mission, CELA will conduct rigorous research that extends our knowledge and practice of experiential learning and assessment by simulations.
