Learning Objectives — At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to describe and discuss:
  1. That utilized general anesthetic agents may not be benign, particularly in the developing and aged brain, as well as in the setting of cancer, and as more is known about this issue, advancement of regional anesthesia and development of new anesthetic agents may be warranted
  2. Multimodal analgesic regimens that feature peripheral nerve blacks
  3. Fundamental principles of ultrasound, basics of sonoantomy of upper extremity, and basic UGRA techniques
  4. Perioperative risk factors associated with acute kidney injury
  5. The needs of anesthesiologists and patient safety to non-physicians in legislative and regulatory positions·   The impact of proposed and implemented legislative and regulatory changes
Statement of Educational Need — Anesthesiology is a medical specialty that makes continuing improvement in patient safety a priority, especially in the proper use of anesthesia as indicated by current research, and is critically affected by federal legislation, regulations, and requirements. Increasing awareness and knowledge in these areas and learning how to develop strategies to incorporate this information is goal of the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Tennessee Society of Anesthesiologists. Standards for patient care are constantly evaluated for efficacy, and presentations on potential hazards of general anesthesia and new approaches using regional anesthesia will directly impact and  strengthen patient safety.  Recent changes in federal legislation and guidelines, incoming federally mandated and third-party payer “pay-for-performance” standards (and their impact on patient safety), and federal and state guidelines concerning how patients must be treated and how such care will be funded will be a vital part of the meeting.

Target Audience — This conference is designed for anesthesiologists in Tennessee.

Americans with Disabilities Act:  It is the policy of Vanderbilt School of Medicine and the Tennessee Society of Anesthesiologists not to discriminate against any person on the basis of disabilities.  If you feel you need services or auxiliary aids mentioned in this act in order to fully participate in this continuing education activity, please attach a note to your registration form.
